Palm Sunday In Argos in 1856 (William George Clark)


In 1856, William George Clark arrived in Argos, Greece just days before the Paschal celebrations. He published a book about his travels in 1858 titled Peloponnesus: Notes of Study and Travel in which he describes his experiences of the celebration of Palm Sunday in the Cathedral of Argos, which allows him to expand his thoughts on the Greek Orthodox Church in general. Of particular interest is his analysis of the narthex in Orthodox churches and its etymology. Below is the entire chapter (left click on each page to make it bigger):
