In 1902-03 there were reports in The New York Times of a Russian sect emerging that revolved around the worship of St. John of Kronstadt - while he was still alive. Of course, he condemned this movement, yet this did not stop the fanaticism of the people, who misinterpreted his unique miraculous powers as a sign that the end of the world was near.
