The Recent Appearance of the Theotokos in the Village of Chrysovitsa

A moving event recently took place in the village of Chrysovitsa in Metsovos. A resident of the village (we have his name available to us) was driving his car outside the village, in "Politses" where the famous potato of Chrysovitsa is cultivated.

On June 12th at around 11:30 PM there appeared in front of him something like a bright cloud with a woman wearing black, having simultaneously the sweetest and austerist look, who asked him: "Do you recognize me?" The confused man replied: "Are you the Panagia of Chrysovitsa?"

She replied: "I am the Panagia of the entire world. Tell your fellow villagers and the residents of the surrounding area to repent", and she immediately disappeared.

We must note that in the village of Chrysovitsa, a village of Priests and Teachers, as well as farmers engaged in the systematic cultivation of the potato, there is the Historic Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Chrysovitsa, which is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites of Epirus, Thessaly and Western Macedonia.

There is kept the wondrous icon of Panagia of Chrysovitsa, the description of which is preserved in a manuscript of the Sacred Monastery of Xeropotamou on the Holy Mountain.

At the main entrance of the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Chrysovitsa, there is an inscription on a stone slab bearing the date 1233.

There is also another inscription on a stone slab in the cells of the Sacred Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Chrysovitsa which mentions the date 1253.

Also, under the current iconography there is another older iconography.

These are elements that should be considered by the 8th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities to restore the historicity of the Sacred Monastery.

The Ecclesiastical Committee of the Sacred Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Chrysovitsa and the Cultural-Educational Association of Chrysovitsa, will oraganize this year on the 14th and 15th of August the Anniversary Celebration on the occasion of 780 years since the discovery of the miraculous icon of Panagia Chrysovitsa.
