The Byzantine Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, which was constructed by Emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora between 527 and 536, was visited yesterday, on the feast day of these two Saints, by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
The Church, which was converted into an Islamic mosque in 1497, around fifty years after the fall of Constantinople, is today called Küçük Ayasofya Camii (Small Hagia Sophia).
On his pious pilgrimage the Ecumenical Patriarch prayed for the founders and all those who served Church of Christ throughout the centuries and liturgized within the confines of this church.
